As one of Iceland's most remarkable place to visit and a natural wonder, Þórsmörk is not only beautiful but also packed with things to see and experience plus hiking trails. A place where you can find peace and quiet and your own little sanctuary by a small creek or under a hunted cliff. It is an ideal place to take a bus from Reykjavík the capital equipped with hiking shoes, a tent, and supplies for a few days stay. Or rent a 4x4 vehicle that can cross rivers and drive on the dirt road leading to Þórsmörk. Preferably to camp by the excellent camping site at Útivist hiking club and take different paths and hiking trails during the day. Some hiking trails are long and challenging while others are relatively short and easy for anyone to walk.
It is an ideal place to take kids for an adventurous stay if you like your children to experience the extraordinary combination of camping and hiking. Whatever you choose to do in Þórsmörk you are always surrounded by beautiful landscape mids in the corner of three glaciers and surrounded by tons of mountains with endless creeks and rivers flooding from mysterious places, all enhanced by the colors of vegetation. Under the glaciers, you have sleeping volcanoes that can wake up at any time, although hardly without some notice from geologists. And if that doesn't frighten you a bit, there are always the ghosts, trolls, and elves that live there all year round and are not specifically happy sharing their “home” with visitors. It is a place for almost everyone, but not those who do not dare and lack a small amount of courage.
