The Golden Circle Superjeep Adventure tour with snowmobile option

The Golden Circle Superjeep Adventure tour with snowmobile option

This tour is operated from Reykjavík and offered to visitors in Reykjavík and the Capital City neighbors towns. The Golden Circle tour is the most popular adventure tour in Iceland and for many good reasons. It is a trip easily doable in a day from Reykjavík the capital of Iceland, a place most of our visitors begin their journey in Iceland, and also because the tour offers a stunning view of fascinating natural wonders. Also a tour of history and geology. History as the first stop is at Iceland’s most valued historical (and almost holy) places and Geology, as you will take a breath-taking look at the various states of earth’s most vital resource, water.  This tour has it all and takes you to lakes, rifts, geysers, waterfalls, rivers and glaciers.

Þingvellir National Park and tectonic plates

The tour begins in Reykjavik and the Capital City area, and our first stop is roughly 40 minutes into the drive at Þingvellir National Park – which, by the way, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The main reason Þingvellir lives at the heart of every Icelander is the fact that it is the home of  Alþingi, the world’s oldest parliament.  Alþingi is a place that had a legislation role as well as a place where disputes were settled in Iceland for centuries. The first parliament session was held back in 930 A.D. Annually, chieftains gathered in Þingvellir in the summer month of June to discuss matters of concern in the chiefdoms, carried out sentences but above all, established rules and regulations to govern the land.
The National Park is also located in the middle of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the tectonic plates of North America and Eurasia meet, forming fissures and crevices along with Iceland’s largest natural lake, Þingvallavatn. The fissures of the valley are a must see for all visitors to Iceland and is one of two places in the world where the tectonic plates are visible on land, the other being the Great Rift Valley in Eastern Africa.

Geysir and Strokkur Hot Spring

From Þingvellir our journey continues to the hot spring at the Geysir area (the geyser from which the word is derived). Although the hot spring Geysir has been relatively dormant in recent years, its neighbor to the south, Strokkur, gushes hot water every ten to fifteen minutes, allowing plenty of time to set up for the next photograph or as of 2010, a selfie. Just over a hundred years ago, Geysir erupted every hour or so, but an earthquake rendered it dormant. Regardless of its inactivity, the geothermal area around Geysir is still one of the most exciting places to see when traveling around Iceland.

Gullfoss Waterfall

From Geysir, we resume our tour to the mighty waterfall Gullfoss or Golden Waterfall.  Although the waterfall is today a part of the Golden Circle Adventure, it has been a tourist attraction for more than a century.  It was a place Icelanders always took distinguish visitors like kings, queens, and famous people.  This spectacular waterfall in the Hvítá River is as magnificent when partly frozen in the winter as it is fluid in the summer. It is not only the most spectacular waterfall in Iceland but continues to find its way on most list presenting the most beautiful waterfalls on planet earth.

 Langjökull glacier

Further to the north, we enter the lower part of the Icelandic highland on a rough gravel road to our next stop, Langjokull glacier.  Here the benefit of taking a Superjeep tour kicks in as bad roads and snowdrift obstacles on the road will not prevent you from reaching the destination. Not to mention traveling in this powerful vehicle. This magnificent icecap is the second largest glacier in Iceland only second to Vatnajökull icecap.  Here you have a rare opportunity to see and feel a glacier. Rare in the sense that few people live near a glacier and many have never seen a glacier or even so much snow.  The glacier is, of course, accessible in summer, and a tour is available on snowmobiles with guides. Needless to say, it is a thrill and for many and once in a lifetime experience, so why not include a snowmobile tour for added adventure?
