The Sculpture and Shore Walk is a popular walking path in Reykjavík. If you need to find something to do while in the city this walk is a splendid way to spend a couple of hours enjoying the scenery, looking sculptures and take a refreshing walk by the ocean. It is a fascinating walk at any time, both during the day and also in the evening any time of the year. The walk is not too long, and there are many stops along the way.  And most of the time the view over the fjord Kollafjörður with its islands and the mountain Esja in the background is stunning.

At Hit Iceland we are always excited when a new restaurant opens in Reykjavík. The restaurant flora and variety in quality food are fast approaching the best any city in the world can offer.  Now we must remember that Reykjavik measured in population is just a small town.  But on many other scales, like the number of quality restaurants, it is a large city.  This is because Reykjavík is a small town with a large city ego; a small town girl with a big city attitude.  This is such a wonderful thing for us living in the city as we have access to things only available in big cities.

Everything about the sculpture Sun Voyager is fascinating.  The Artist Jón Gunnar Árnason was a mechanic who left a successful career as a mechanic in his early career to become an artist.  As an artist, he was a pioneer and a philosopher with a vision. In his life nothing had a higher priority than art. He is considered by many to be one of Iceland's most remarkable sculptor and artists. Jón Gunnar was born in 1931 and passed away in 1989 only 58 years old.

Time is relative when it comes to the term morning in Iceland. That is if morning refers to the time when it gets bright. In the winter morning can drag on until ten or sometimes depend on the weather, eleven. If it is cloudy and thick darkens seems to stay on forever. But in the summertime, we end up having brightness the whole night and Mr. Morning has no idea when he is supposed to enter the day.  We are now approaching that time with all is joy and wonders.

City Center district in Reykjavík capital of Iceland

Reykjavik is the birthplace of Iceland. According to written sources from the 13th century, it is the place of settlement of Ingólfur Arnarson; often referred to as the man who found Iceland. Archeological research has confirmed that already in the ninth century a Viking village existed where Reykjavík is now. The result of the study can be viewed at an exhibition in Aðalstræti.

Reykjavík districts

There are ten districts in Reykjavík the capital of Iceland. Each district has its characteristics mostly driven from the time the it was developed.  Although Reykjavík has been around for a long time, some would even claim that it has been around for centuries, most of the city was built and developed in the 20th century.

Reykjavík

Reykjavík, with its 10 districts, is the capital of Iceland. The population of Reykjavík at the end of year 2016 is 122.500.  It is one of the most interesting places to visit if you are traveling in Iceland. Although labeled as a city it is more like a small town, measured by population or comparison with cities around the globe; or even measured by many other indicators for towns and cities.
