The town of Reyðarfjörður is one of the larger towns in the Eastern Region in Iceland. The town's recent history is one of a kind compared to any other town or village in Iceland. Reyðarfjörður is a town that we can categorise and an entirely modern small town with all the modern service people require. While most towns and villages in Iceland have three main factors as their prerequisite for development; fishing, trading and tourism, Reyðarfjörður also has an Aluminium smelter. An economic foundation that gives the town almost an exceptionally strong economic base and prosperity. In addition to the smelter, the recent tunnel between Reyðarfjörður and Fáskrúðsfjörður has helped the Fjarðarbyggð Municipal to prosper more than most places out in the countryside.
The conflicting poles of an Aluminium smelter and nature
Interestingly some would argue whether it is worth it when viewing the humongous aluminium smelter planted in the beautiful fjord. It is an old and ongoing debate in Iceland about the conflict between large-scale industry and preservation of nature. In Reyðarfjörður, you can come eye to eye with the smelter and judged if it is unfit in the landscape or if it is a welcome addition to the economy.
A town that originated in fishing and trading
Like most of the towns and villages around the coastline, Reyðarfjörður was a village originated in a trading post in the late 19th century and rich fishing grounds. The village had an exceptionally good natural harbour conditions at the bottom of the longest fjord in the East Region. It also had the advantages when it came to communication.
Probably one of the most prosperous small towns in Iceland
Today Reyðarfjörður is one of the most affluent small villages in Iceland and provides excellent service to both residents and visitors. Most towns and villages in Iceland have single family houses and only a few, like Reyðarfjörður, also have large apartment buildings. The town offers good education for children from preschool to high school. It has state of the art sports facilities and shares a wonderful swimming pool with its neighbour Eskifjörður. As part of the Fjarðarbyggð municipal, the town offers excellent health service and good care for the elderly. For all those reasons it is a fascinating place to stop for your visit to Iceland.
