Sauðárkrókur is more like a agricultural service center rather than a fishing town
Although the town is by the coast, and not inland, Sauðárkrókur has always been more of a service center for the broad agricultural area in Skagafjörður, rather than a fishing town. Much of the town’s service and companies originate in agriculture and trading. As a trading post in the past, it had difficulties and had to compete with the small village and trading post of Hofsós on the other side of the fjord. In 1857, Sauðárkrókur received a certification to trade and took off. After that trading had become quite lively and many trading companies and shops competed in the small market.
Fish processing came late in the devloopment
