The small village of Vopnafjörður is in the Eastern region and like its neighbours was quite isolated and remote for centuries. Mostly due to the distance from other more populated areas and poor communication. The name Vopnafjörður means the fjord of weapons and comes from the first settler Eyvindur Weapon, a Viking that settled here in the 9th century. One of the Icelandic Sagas bears the name of the area, Vopnfirðingasaga. So the small village has a profound historical reference.
A trading place Danish-Icelandic Monopoly
In the 17th and 18th century the fjord was a place of trading and merchants came here from Europe. It was one of three principal places of trading in the North East region, before and during the Danish-Icelandic Monopoly that ended in 1787. After the abolition of the trading monopoly the trading company Ørum & Wulff had an extensive operation until the 20th century. Historically the village is more of a trading place rather than fishing. It is located in an area traditionally surround with farms and agricultural activity.
A flourishing small village based on fishing and fish processing
Today fishing and fish processing are the main bases of the village economy. Like in many communities in Iceland the 20th-century fishing made a difference in the shift from trading and agriculture to fishing. The development was related to motorboats early in the 20th century and later the Herring frenzy that dominated the economic life of a large part of the northern and north-eastern part of Iceland in the forties and fifties. Today most of the residents have their livelihood from fishing. Compared to many towns and villages in Iceland Vopnafjörður economy is quite stable and promising.
