A couple hiking in the northern region in Iceland, coming from Héðinsfjörður hiking to Siglufjörður, had a major ordeal when they found themselves in a difficult spot.  The trouble began as they were passing through a very steep and high slope in the mountain on the other side of the village Siglufjörður, in the part called Nesskriður. The slope is extremely steep and considered almost impassable, which is the reason the couple ended in an impasse. They could not move up or down to their left or right. In the end, they managed to call the Icelandic Help Line and get assistance from a local Rescue Squad.
Although well trained and very familiar with the landscape and terrain this was a rather large and challenging operation for the Rescue Squad. The process took more than six hours and required more than 30 people from many of the nearby towns and villages.  Many of them had to take huge risks in rappelling and climbing.
Fortunately, the couple was saved from their troubles and are both alive and well, although they were surely in a highly dangerous and live threatening situation.  This is a reminder that Iceland is sometimes not an easy part of the world to hike and travel.  It is not wise to start a hike without thoroughly studying the trail and if you are entering places where few people go, let the nearby Rescue Squad or the Helpline know your plan beforehand.
