Eldgjá, is a canyon, at the eastern entrance to the Highland road Nyrðri Fjallabak. The canyon stretches 60 kilometers from Vatnajökull to the volcano Katla. It is a geological phenomenon, formed at the middle of the tenth century in an enormous eruption that lasted for many years; about the same time the first settlers came to in Iceland. The Canyon also has a few natural wonders like the beautiful waterfall, Ófærufoss (the impassable waterfall). Eldgjá is also one of the most popular tourist attraction in the Vatnajökull National Park and should not be skipped by those who travel the Highland Road, Nyrðri Fjallabak.
