Lake Mývatn in winter

Only a few years ago during the winter moths not a single guest or a visitor was seen at Lake Mývatn. Although one of the busiest and most popular tourist attraction in Iceland during summer, the whole place shut down during winter.  People who came to visit Iceland and locals alike preferred the summer.  Who would have thought or predicted that only a few years later Lake Mývatn would be almost as busy during winter as it was during those summer moths?
It is conveniently surprising to Icelanders how many tourists are interested in traveling in Iceland during winter moths.  Of course, Lake Mývatn and the surrounding area has a lot to offer during winter.  It is a beautiful place, both in summer and winter, different but still beautiful.  You can visit Dimmuborgir, the lava wonderland, dip in the hot water in the cave Grjótagjá, walk on the frozen lake, drive or walk over to Námaskarð and relax at the Nature Bath.
For photographers, there are always opportunities in the calm weather and frozen landscape.  It is one of the most amazing places in Iceland, both in summer and winter.
