There are vast areas in the Highland in Iceland covered with black sand. But those areas are not necessarily completely without some vegetation, as some plants are robust enough to sustain the altitude and the cold in the Icelandic Highland during summer. In the winter, everything is packed with snow. Then some places seem like exceptions, oasis-like spots in the middle of nowhere; Herðubreiðalindir being one of the most interesting examples. But there are also quite a few places that seem almost strange with both green plants and neon green plants that grow in or by water streams by the black sand. Here is one example taken near the mountain Öldufell on the Highland mountain road Syðri Fjallabak.
