Visiting towns and villages in one of the exciting things you can do in Iceland if you choose to take a road trip and travel outside the popular southwest region.  Most of the towns around the country have excellent services like accommodation, a camping site, a gas station, a convenience store, a restaurant or a café, a swimming pool and some form of recreational activity, local museums, and tours.  In each region, you will find small harbors and old houses, many that have been renovated in recent years giving the town and villages a friendly atmosphere.  Although we have many towns and villages in Iceland and most of them are the product of rich fishing grounds most of the villages have their unique history.
In the Westfjords there are 12 towns and villages that are all quite interesting to visit.  The towns are all an excellent stop if you are traveling the Westfjords road trip. The village Bíldudalur is for instance of the oldest villages in Iceland and has an interesting history of progress and enthusiastic entrepreneurs. Bolungarvík village is a wonderful place to visit with a good camping site and beautiful surroundings. Flateyri Village is a small fishing town with a sad chapter of a heartbreaking avalanche. And a walk through the old town in Ísafjörður is a must for anyone visiting the Westfjords.
