There are many reasons to stop at the pleasant village Hvammstangi in the Northern Region in Iceland. Located at the Vatnsnes Peninsula, it is a neighbor to some stunning natural wonders. Hvítserkur and Borgarvirki on the east side of Vatnsnes and many interesting seal colonies north of the village on the west side of Vatnsnes. The village became a certified trading post at the end of the 19th century. At that time, no one lived there. It wasn’t until the beginning of the 20th century that people started to build houses and move to the area around the trading post that a community began to form. Before the trading certification was issued, the surrounding area consisted only of farms and agricultural activities. Service was sought to other small villages and towns in the Northern Region.
Opportunities opened with new technology
Like many towns and villages around the coastline in Iceland, Hvammstangi doesn’t have any history as a town or a village before the 20th century. It is a product of new technology in fishing and fish processing and better communication and trading. Up to that point, Iceland was mainly agricultural society with few dense areas around the coastline.

The first houses emerged at the beginning of the 20th century when the Danish merchant Riis started his trading. At the same time, the Icelandic cooperative society was beginning to develop and started important activities in Hvammstangi at the same time. In the second decade of the century, an Icelandic merchant Sigurður Pálmason also started his trading, so Hvammstangi was very forward going community and competitive for its time. In the decades that followed so did, the village and new service’s started to appear along with community development and services. A new church excellent, schools, community center, a swimming pool, and a health center. All the key services and institutions required by any civilized community that wanted to provide quality of life to its residents.

Located six kilometers from the Ring Road, Hvammstangi was never a place Icelanders or tourists visited much until the beginning of the 21st century. Although not farther from the Ring Road it was a bit isolated. Today, on the other hand, the village has become one of the villages around the shoreline that people should not miss. Although it is not an old village, it is a neat and convenient place to visit. The community has taken significant steps towards the new industry, tourism. It also has one of the best Camping Site in Iceland, Kirkjuhvammur, located in a beautiful setting above the village. Hvammstangi is an overall a pleasant place to live in with good quality service to its residents. The village has good schools, an excellent swimming pool and sports center, a quality care for the elderly and a church. It is a plesant place to visit.
